Battle of the Yellow Sea
The Battle of the Yellow sea was fought on August 10, 1904. The Russians had 24 warships and were led by Admiral Wilgelm Vitgeft. The Japanese had 62 warships and were led by Admiral Heihachiro Togo. If you recall, Russian warships were ordered to go join the Vladivostok base to make a bigger fleet which would be powerful enough to defeat the Japanese Navy. In order for the Russian ships to reach Vladivostok, they would have to break through the Japanese blockade that surrounded Port Arthur. On August 10,1904, the Russian Navy left Port Arthur some time in the morning, by 12:00 pm they were in front of the blockade. The Russians bushed through the blockade with a brief artillery duel. However, the Japanese navy followed the Russian fleet and by 4:00 pm the Japanese had caught up and were firing upon the Russian fleet. They fought for 2 hours until 6:00 pm when a Japanese shell hit the command ship and killed most of the commanding officers on board. Five Russian warships made it Shanghai,China, one warship made it to Saigon,Vietnam but those ships were interned (imprisonment of without any legal process). One Russian ship headed towards Vladivostok but was intercepted by Japanese ships. The other 17 warships returned to Port Arthur defeated. The casualties from the Battle of Yellow Sea ended with 343 Russians dead or wounded, 226 Japanese dead or wounded and one torpedo ship having been sunken. The outcome of the attempted breakout ended with the Russians never attempting another breakout, all guns being used for the defense of Port Arthur instead of trying to leave.
