The Battle of Mukden
The Battle of Mukden took place on January 26 - March 10, 1905. There were 276,000 Russians led by Aleksey Kuropatkin, while there were 270,000 Japanese led by Oyama Iwao. This battle was a psychological blow to Europe because it reinforced the idea that an oriental nation as small as Japan could defeat a European nation. During the battle, the Japanese and Russians were evenly matched in the forests and hills. Even though the two forces were about evenly matched, there were heavy casualties on both sides which made Russian Kuropatkin order for his forces to retreat. The Japanese however did not allow the Russians to simply left and chased after them however Kuropatkin's forces went straight into Iwao's flanking forces. The Russians surrendered with 90,000 dead or wounded, while the Japanese had 70,000 dead or wounded. Japan was barely holding on to its economy, while Russia unexpectedly had a stable economy. The Battle of Mukden was the last land battle of the Russo-Japanese war.
